ABOUT JEFF "TAIN" WATTS

Easily ranking among the most gifted and influential drummers in jazz history, Pittsburgh native Jeff Watts gained notice for his fiery improvisational style and mastery of rhythm, and is best known for his 20-year association with saxophonist and composer Branford Marsalis. Initially a classical percussion student at Duquesne University, Watts transferred to Boston’s Berklee College of Music and met Wynton Marsalis, beginning a seven-year stint in the young trumpeter’s band in 1982 that netted the drummer two GRAMMY awards.

He joined Wynton’s older brother Branford’s band in 1989, recording 18 albums including the GRAMMY winners I Heard You Twice the First Time (1992) and Contemporary Jazz (2000). Given his nickname (short for Chieftain) by pianist and his Branford Marsalis quartet bandmate Kenny Kirkland, Watts has released seven albums as a leader and received a Guggenheim fellowship for composition in 2017. Beyond his work with the Marsalis brothers, Watts has worked widely with Geri Allen, Alice Coltrane, Michael Brecker, Betty Carter, Kenny Garrett, Sonny Fortune, Danilo Perez, McCoy Tyner, and the Mingus Big Band, among others.
