Original show description below.
Due to the unfortunate recent passing of the late great Joey DeFrancesco, B3 organist Larry Goldings will be performing in his place.
A power trio like no other makes its debut at SFJAZZ, as Joe Lovano is joined by organist Larry Goldings and master drummer Lewis Nash for this opening night of Lovano’s week.
A keyboardist whose artistry reaches far beyond jazz, Goldings began his career with the likes of Sarah Vaughan Jim Hall and is best known for his incendiary trio with guitarist Peter Bernstein and drummer Bill Stewart — a group that recently celebrated its 30th Anniversary. Goldings has contributed his singular style to the work of Maceo Parker, Jon Mayer, John Scofield, and Norah Jones, and has toured for years with rock legend James Taylor.
Lewis Nash is one of the era’s indispensable drum set poets, a consummate artist with more than 400 albums to his credit, including several classic sessions with Lovano. Among the most influential rhythm masters of the last four decades, Nash is a member of the Blue Note 7 and has had lengthy associations with Tommy Flanagan, Houston Person, McCoy Tyner, Gerald Wilson, and Ron Carter, among others.
For Lovano, who first gained notice touring with B-3 greats Brother Jack McDuff and Dr. Lonnie Smith before joining the saxophone pantheon as one of the most celebrated and influential tenor players in jazz, the trio is a return to his deepest roots. For everyone else it’s a meeting for the ages not to be missed.
