Original show description below.
“(This quartet) provides testimony to the saxophonist’s mantra: Jazz, when played well, reaches far beyond the realm of the cerebral and communicates from the belly of raw emotion” (Variety).
More than a reunion of old friends, Joshua Redman’s Moodswing quartet is a communion of four mid-career masters who’ve shaped jazz in the 21st century.
Brian Blade, Brad Mehldau and Christian McBride first toured and recorded together as part of Redman’s original working band, a group documented on his third album, 1994’s Moodswing. His previous release Wish featured the legendary players who’d taken Redman under their wings (Pat Metheny, Charlie Haden, Billy Higgins) and he followed up by introducing a new band with four extraordinarily promising musicians in their early and mid-20s. Redman’s 2020 Nonesuch album RoundAgain brings the all-star Moodswing quartet together for the first time since the mid-90s, and it’s an encounter for the ages. With compositions by each of the players, the Moodswing book is a true collective endeavor by four era-defining jazz artists whose creative reach extends into a vast array of styles and traditions.
