ABOUT THIS BROADCAST
A free live broadcast of the 2022 SFJAZZ Gala Concert honoring Wynton Marsalis – a fundraiser for SFJAZZ’s artistic and education programs. Trumpeter Wynton Marsalis is an iconic figure in the evolution of the art form and a tireless advocate for jazz as America’s classical music. SFJAZZ honors Marsalis with a SFJAZZ Lifetime Achievement Award at its annual SFJAZZ Gala (the first since the pandemic) with a star-studded concert, hosted by actor Wendell Pierce, celebrating the trumpeter’s decorated career and immense body of work.

Marsalis himself will perform, along with trumpeter Terence Blanchard (a buddy since high school), vocalist Catherine Russell, the SFJAZZ Collective, and other special guests, including a trio of emerging musicians—the performance will exude the blues feeling, and it will swing. All donations to the “SFJAZZ Fund” during the live broadcast and encores will benefit SFJAZZ’s artistic and educational programs.

ABOUT WYNTON MARSALIS
From his New Orleans beginnings and fiery debut with legendary drummer Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers to his string of acclaimed albums and current role as Artistic Director of Jazz at Lincoln Center, Marsalis has amassed an unrivaled number of awards and accolades, including nine GRAMMYs and the Pulitzer Prize for Music, the first ever awarded to a jazz artist. Since 1988, he has led the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, a 15-piece assemblage of virtuosos which has contemporized the notion of a "big band," simultaneously honoring the rich heritage of Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong while debuting a stunning variety of commissions from illustrious names including Joe Henderson, Christian McBride, Freddie Hubbard, Joe Lovano and of course, Wynton himself.
