Here are five things to know about the rising singer, Deva Mahal, who brings her band to SFJAZZ on January 28-31, 2018, opening for funk legend Maceo Parker in his annual New Year's run at the SFJAZZ Center.
- She's the daughter of blues legend Taj Mahal, and co-wrote the song “Never Let You Go” on her father’s 2009 GRAMMY-nominated Maestro album.
- Mahal has collaborated with a diverse group of artists including members of TV on the Radio, Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, Living Colour, and the New York Pops Orchestra.
- She made her film debut in David O’Russell’s Oscar-nominated movie American Hustle, and recently recorded with composer Byran Senti for the upcoming film The Experimenter.
- Growing up in Hawaii and New Zealand, Mahal is big on the Kiwi scene – she’s one half of acclaimed band Fredericks Brown (with NZ-born keyboardist Steph Brown) and recently released a new single "March" with NZ-based Experimental Soul band Electric Wire Hustle.
- She recently worked on a new Afro Futuristic RnB duo project called Skylines with Philly born producer Mike McFadden.
