Original show description below.

A jazz guitar master and a Bay Area music treasure, Rick Vandivier is known widely for his eponymous ensemble Vandivier and Primary Colors, his duo project with vocalist Nate Pruitt. Active in the Bay Area scene for over 35 years, the guitarist has worked with John Handy, Dr. Lonnie Smith, More Allison, and 2021 NEA Jazz Master Albert “Tootie” Heath.

For this Hotplate, Vandivier performs material from guitar giant John Scofield’s 1990 Blue Note debut Time on My Hands, with a quartet that features saxophonist Charles McNeal.

Prior to each performance, DJ Weekend Girl will spin a special curated vinyl DJ set that complements this evening's music.

The first of Scofield’s albums released during his decade-long stint with Blue Note, Time on My Hands was also his first recorded collaboration with Joe Lovano, and continued the guitarist’s exploration of a more straight-ahead, if gritty, approach that was a major departure from the funk/fusion sound of his 1980s work. Comprised of 11 tracks composed by the leader and co-produced by drumming great Peter Erskine, the album veers from bebop burners like “Stranger to the Night” to the gentle balladry of “Nocturnal Mission,” and gives plenty of room for the all-star ensemble including Lovano, bassist Charlie Haden, and drummer Jack DeJohnette to shine brightly.
